Research – ‘Dance of the Brush’ by Ralph Thompson

Ralph Thompson (1913 – 2009) was an artist who in particular illustrated animals and nature. I really enjoyed his book ‘Dance of the Brush’ as it showed his creative process from playful locational drawing sketches, to his just as energetic final pieces.

Quite by chance I came across the introduction of the book which is written by Gerald Durrell, who commissioned Thompson to create illustrations for a number of his children’s books – most notably ‘Menagerie Manor’.

I also really liked his abstract pieces which he experimented with, as they also portray the energy of the animals but in a more colourful, stylised way.
